One reason people are cutting down forests is to draw the material wealth from what forests usually produce, which is wood. Wood has been used in construction throughout history, as well as being used for fire material, and other human products.

Another reason humans cut down forests is to clear land for farming. Forests has large amounts of fertile soil, as hundreds if not thousands of years worth of dead trees and animal's nutrients has decomposed and has been recycled into the soil. This makes the area highly farmable and easy to grow crops, leading to humans to cut down the trees for farmland.
