Diego Salazar Pelaez, a 63-year-old Quindiano based in the Valle del Cauca municipality of Dagua, was with his wife in the El Nogal tavern when the bomb exploded. He was wounded but with enough breath to try to find it in the middle of smoke and darkness. He did not find her, but instead, he ran into a stunned child. He tied it around his waist and took him out into the street. This gesture saved the child's life, while he was extinguished three days later at the Shaio Clinic.
