Don José de San Martín is the greatest hero of the Independence of Argentina, Chile and Peru. He was born in Yapeyú (Argentina), the 25 of February of 1778, being his parents Don Juan de San Martin and Dona Gregoria Matorras. It studied in a military school of Spain and fought against Moors, Portuguese and French. In 1813 he returned to his homeland to fight for his independence. In 1813, he defeated the Spaniards in the battle of San Lorenzo. From 1814 he organized the Army of the Andes, with which he crossed the Cordillera in 1817. He gained the independence of Chile winning the battles of Chacabuco (1817) and Maipú (1818). In September of 1820 it arrived at Peru, and 28 of July of 1821 proclaimed its independence. It was Protector of Peru and retired in September of 1822 without finishing to expel to the Spanish army. In 1823 he arrived in Buenos Aires and in 1824 he traveled to Europe. He settled in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, where he died on August 17, 1850.
