Background Information: In the early morning hours on June 17, 1972, five men were arrested after they
broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington,
D.C. The men were found with camera equipment, electronic recording devices, and a large amount of money.
The police quickly realized that it was more than ordinary burglary but they never imagined that it would
lead all the way to the White House.
Assignment Directions: After reviewing Chapter 19 and “Primary Sources: The Meaning of Watergate”,
imagine yourself as an American in the 1970s. In the first-person, write a 1 - 2 paragraph narrative that
reflects how events such as the Watergate affected your opinion of the President and the U.S.
government. Remember that all writing should be in complete sentences and your paragraphs should have
between 5 - 8 sentences.
