The title refers to the distance traveled under the different seas and not to any depth reached, since 20,000 leagues (80,000 km) is almost twice the circumference of the Earth; [6] the greatest depth reached in the novel is four leagues (16 kilometers or 52,493 feet, almost five kilometers deeper than the actual maximum depth of the ocean). This distinction becomes clearer when the French title of the book is correctly translated: literally translated, it should read "Twenty thousand leagues of submarine voyage" (not "Sea"). The book uses metric leagues, which are four kilometers each

Professor Pierre Aronnax – the narrator of the story, a French natural scientist

Conseil – Aronnax's servant, very devoted to him and knowledgeable in biological classification

Ned Land – a Canadian harpooner, described as having "no equal in his dangerous trade"[8]

Captain Nemo – the designer and captain of the Nautilus
