Activity 3: Read the following biography about Manlio Argueta
Manlio Argueta was bom in San Miguel, El Salvador on November 24, 1935. He
says that his imagination as a child helped him to become a poet. As a teenager he
loved to read world literature and that strongly influenced him. At the age of 13 he
began his writing career as a poet. Although he was unknown for a long time, he did
win a national prize for his poetry in 1956. This gained him some recognition among
Salvadoran and Central American poets. Argueta soon became a member of the
"Committed Generation". Many of his writings criticized the government and because
of that he was exiled to Costa Rica in 1972. He was not able to return to El Salvador
until the 1990s. Currently Argueta lives in El Salvador where he holds the position of
director of the National Public Library.
