Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) es un ex marine que luego de una batalla en la Tierra queda parapléjico. Como parte de un programa de rehabilitación, Jake es enviado a Pandora donde se convertirá en un Avatar (un híbrido capaz de respirar el aire de Pandora y a través del cual podrá caminar nuevamente). Alli, Jake se enamorará de una princesa Na´vi pero pronto se verá atrapado en un conflicto entre su nuevo mundo y el ejército humano que busca explotar los recursos naturales de Pandora.

While learning to be a na'vi, Jake periodically reports to Quaritch on how to destroy Mother Tree. Jake increasingly spends time with the Na'vi, marveling at his culture and abilities, and also, spending so much time together, he and Neytiri fall in love. As a result, he begins to forget his mission and even his life as a human, and fails to inform Quaritch. Grace is also accepted by the Omaticaya. When only one day is left for the ceremony in which Jake will definitely become part of the clan, Quaritch informs him that his mission is over and that he can return to Earth to be healed. However, he asks him to let him be at the ceremony, telling him that if he becomes one of them he will be able to convince the Omaticaya to leave. After the ceremony, Neytiri takes Jake to the Tree of Voices, where he shows him the connection they may have with Eywa, his deity. In that place, Jake and Neytiri are sincere about their feelings and they are united like couple.The na'vi, aided by Norm in his avatar and Trudy in his ship, try to fight the military, but although they outnumber them (there are more than fifteen clans) they can do almost nothing against their armament. Trudy, Tsu'tey and the avatar of Norm, like hundreds of na'vi, die during the battle. However, when all seems lost, Eywa, who miraculously heard Jake's prayers, sends all of Pandora's creatures to attack humans, while Jake manages to destroy his two main ships. The na'vi achieve the victory, but Colonel Quaritch, far from surrendering and protected by a colossal armor (the AMP Suit), arrives to the place where the human Jake is with intent to kill him. Neytiri appears in that moment on the back of a Thanator (his Ikran died during the battle) and begins to attack to him, but Quaritch manages to kill the beast leaving Neytiri trapped under its dead weight. Jake arrives at that moment, and he and Quaritch begin to fight to the death. Jake breaks a part of the armor leaving the torch of Quaritch uncovered, but the colonel manages to break the cockpit, and the human Jake wakes up and begins to drown. Jake na'vi is unconscious, and Quaritch tries to assassinate him, but Neytiri frees himself and manages to kill the colonel with two arrows. Then she tries to help the unconscious Jake na'vi, but soon realizes that the real Jake is drowning in the cabin. When Neytiri arrives, Jake looks dead, but he manages to put on a gas mask and he comes back to himself.Parker Selfridge and military personnel are expelled from Pandora, while Jake (as new leader), Norm and the scientists who study Pandora are allowed to stay. The film ends when Jake's mind is pierced, through the same ritual they attempted with Grace, to his avatar na'vi permanently through the Tree of Souls.
