Sería bueno comenzar por interpretar el sentido de este camino, no como un camino que recorremos dejando atrás etapa tras etapa y llegando finalmente, tal y como partimos si acaso, un poco mas viejos, a alguna meta en donde recogeremos los frutos o recompensas del esfuerzo.
Más bien hemos de tomar esta enseñanza como el mito del viaje, en donde el viajero parte con la intención de llegar a cierto puerto, podríamos decir Itaca, y es con la experiencia del viaje mismo que nos trasformamos y enriquecemos y al llegar no es necesario obtener ningún premio. La isla hacia la que partimos fue la excusa, pero fue realizando el viaje que comprendimos, cambiamos, abrimos el corazón y la mente y la trasformación experimentada es la verdadera meta.
Usaré como base para esta exposición la forma en que Sangharakshita ha traducido y explorado la enseñanza y que podéis encontrar en castellano bajo el título “Budismo para principiantes y maestros”.
