Los trópicos terrestres actuaron como barreras naturales tanto para pingüinos como para osos polares. Este es otro motivo importante por el que no pueden llegar o migrar a polos opuestos y por lo tanto quedan limitados a vivir en el hemisferio norte y en el hemisferio sur los pingüinos.
