A carpet 2.5 m by 1.5 m is placed in the center of a room 5 m by 4 m. What is the area of the uncovered part of the floor?

The uncovered part of the floor is 16.25 square meters = 16,25 m²

Explanation:

The shape of the room and the carpet are two rectangles

A rectangle is a 4 sided polygon with opposite sides equal and parallel. All four angles are right angles (90 degrees)

Area is 2-dimensional: it has a length and a width. Area is measured in square units. In this exercise we have square meters

To find the area of a rectangle multiply the length by the width

The formula is:

So we will find the area of the room (larger area)

Then the area of the carpet (smaller area)

Thus to find the area of the uncovered part of the floor just substract the two areas  

Calculate the area of the 2 sections

1) Finding the area of the room (Larger area)

To find the area that isn't carpeted or uncovered, substract the room area from the carpet area as it follows
