The pyramids of Egypt are, of all the vestiges bequeathed by the Egyptians of antiquity, the most
recognized portentous and emblematic. Built as royal crypts for the pharaohs since the year
2700 BC, with blocks of stone lined with limestone, they were in sight, large colored constructions
White.
Symbols of modern Egypt, and although at least a hundred have been located, the most recognized are
the pyramids of Keóps, Khafre and Menkaure erected on the plain of Giza, by order of these pharaohs,
being one of them the highest realized and that are observed on the outskirts of the modern Egyptian capital, El
Cairo.
The Mastaba of the Pharaoh, in Saqqara.
In the Pyramid Texts, engraved on the walls of the burial chambers of some of them
During the Old Kingdom, there is a prayer for the king and his pyramid:
"Oh Atum, put your arms around this great king, around this building, and around this
pyramid as the arms of the ka symbol, so that the essence of the king can be in it, lasting
forever.1 oh
Great Ennead that you are in Heliopolis, make the name of the king endure, make this pyramid of the king and
this construction of yours will endure forever, as the name of Atum who presides over the Great
Ennead endures. "2
This last phrase is repeated many times, varying the names of the gods and their epithets.
The texts cited indicate the function of the pyramid: to contain the "essence" of the king for all eternity.
According to the same texts, the king is resurrected, and ascends to heaven to live eternally among the gods,
transfigured into a star. (see: Components of the human being in Ancient Egypt).
First monumental pyramids
Dyeser's "Step Pyramid" at Saqqara.
At the beginning of Dynasty III (c. 2700 BC) the royal mastabas were transformed into pyramids
staggered, made up of several steps, as a "gigantic staircase" that rises to the sky.
The first and most famous of these is the stepped pyramid of Saqqara of Pharaoh Dyeser (Djoser), whose
architect was Imhotep, who possibly wanted to create a monument that soared into the sky, like
a gigantic staircase, in order to symbolize the ascension of the deceased from the "underworld" "towards the
"Heavens".
The next stage in the evolution of the pyramids, was the construction ordered to erect by the king
Seneferu, the so-called "rhomboid pyramid", or "bent pyramid", in the Dahshur region, which is
considered an intermediate stage between the "esca pyramid"
