URBAN CAMOUFLAGE
Look at the picture outside a vegetable shop. Do you see the bright peppers and tomatoes? Now look at
the centre of the photograph. That's right - a woman is lying on the vegetable stand! Obviously, she isn't
shopping for vegetables. So what is she doing there!
The woman is in an advert for a TV programme, Covert Affairs. A British TV channel asked the painter
5 Carolyn Roper to paint realistic vegetables on the woman, to make her invisible. Roper also painted
a woman to look like part of a taxi and she painted a third woman to look like part of a bus. In the
photograph, people are sitting near the woman on the bus, but most of them don't see her! We call this
method of using colours and shapes to hide things, camouflage.
Animals use camouflage to hide from predators, and in the military people often wear uniforms with
10 camouflage, too. Now modern artists like Roper are using urban camouflage, camouflage in cities, for
advertising, to hide ugly buildings and to improve old cars. Their work is exciting and surprising, and it's
making cities more cheerful than they were in
