1.Many of the germs that cause respiratory illnesses are transmitted through droplets from coughs and sneezes. These germs are usually spread from person to person when those who are not infected have close contact with someone who is sick. Some people can become infected by touching something with these germs on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

2. In general, the best way to help prevent the transmission of germs that cause respiratory disease is to avoid contact with droplets or secretions of saliva, mucus, and tears. Measures that can help include the following:

Minimize close contact with people who have symptoms of respiratory illness, such as coughing or sneezing.

Help sick people hold back the droplets they cough and sneeze (see Respiratory Hygiene and Cough Management).

Wash your hands regularly.

Avoid sharing personal items such as eating or drinking utensils, toothbrushes, and towels. You should avoid sharing these items especially with sick people.

Maintain a clean environment.

3. Some respiratory illnesses, like influenza, can be prevented with a vaccine. Check with local health officials to see if they are getting the flu shot at your evacuation center. Use the Flu Vaccine Locator to find the nearest vaccination clinic. The Vaccines and Vaccine Preventable Diseases * page also provides a detailed list of recommended vaccines in the US and non-routine vaccines, based on disease.
