I had been wanting to write about environmental volunteering for a long time, since being an environmental volunteer for many years, I have observed with pleasure how in recent times more and more people and entities are encouraged to contribute their bit in different causes and activities that are very worthwhile.
And it is that, although environmental volunteering is perhaps not as well known as other types of volunteering such as social volunteering, it is true that it has more and more prominence. And this, in my view, is due to several causes, which are also largely related to the benefits that its practice provides:
-Greater environmental awareness of society as a whole (administration, associations, citizens, companies).
-More and better dissemination of activities through the Internet and social networks.
-Multiple benefits provided by environmental volunteering: care and improvement of one's environment, socialization, adoption of healthy habits, increased self-esteem, etc.
Throughout this article I will take a tour of some of the experiences that I know best (all of them developed in Cantabria), to end with some personal reflections on both positive and negative aspects related to environmental volunteering.
2. Environmental volunteering in Cantabria
In Cantabria there have been experiences of environmental volunteering (although at first they were not considered as such) for several decades, in the hands of groups linked to the scout movement and entities such as ARCA (Association for the Defense of Natural Resources of Cantabria) , Bosques de Cantabria, Ecologists in Action, Fundación Naturaleza y Hombre, Fundación Oso Pardo, or SEO-Birdlife, among others.
However, it has been in the last decade when there has been a real emergence of environmental volunteering, since there are thousands of volunteers who regularly or occasionally carry out some type of action related to the conservation of the environment.
