Colombia responsible for the death of journalist Nelson Carvajal
Carvajal and violation of the right to freedom of expression in
Pitalito, Huila.
On June 6, 2018, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
found the State of Colombia responsible for the death of the
journalist Nelson Carvajal Carvajal, as well as held the State
responsible for the violation of the right to personal integrity and
protection of the relatives of the direct victim.
Furthermore, the Court considered that the rights of movement
and residence of some of the next of kin of Mr. Carvajal Carvajal
• who were forced to leave their place of residence were also
violated. The facts of the case took place in Pitalito, department of Huila,
when Carvajal Carvajal was deprived of his life after receiving
seven shots from a firearm, on April 16, 1998. This event
occurred within the framework of a generalized context of
impunity for acts of violence against journalists in Colombia, and
Carvajal Carvajal was a journalist who reported on and
denounced matters of local interest. In particular, his work referred to irregularities in the
administration of public funds, acts of corruption and money
laundering from drug trafficking in the area and the department
of Huila in general. Therefore, the Inter-American Court ruled
that the Colombian State is responsible for the failure to
guarantee the right to life of the murdered journalist .
