cuando tenes WHEN (cuando) la acción que se estaba realizando se interrumpe. el pocas palabras... antes de when la acción va en continuo y después de when la acción sigue en pasado simple.
ej:
Yo estaba cocinando CUANDO mi mamá vino.

Con WHILE (mientras) es al revés, antes de WHILE la acción va en pasado simple y después de WHILE la acción pasa a ser pasado continuo.
