The speaker thinks about who owns the forest he is passing through and is quite sure he knows the owner. However, the owner's house is far away in the village and therefore he is physically unable to see the speaker stop to watch the snow fall in the forest.

The speaker believes that his horse must find it strange to stop so far from any sign of civilization. In fact, they are surrounded only by the forest and a frozen lake, on the longest night of the year.

The horse shakes the bells on its harness, as if asking if the speaker made a mistake stopping. The only other sound besides the ringing of these bells is that of the wind and falling snowflakes, which the speaker compares to goose down feathers.

He finds the forest very attractive, drawn both by its darkness and by how vast and omnipresent it seems. However, the speaker has obligations to fulfill elsewhere. Therefore, although he would like to stay and rest, the speaker knows that there are many more miles to go before it is possible.
