Respuesta: in this lesson you will find the following about the present continuous or present progressive: usage, structure, spelling rules, and comprehension activity.

English learners often wonder what the difference is between present progressive and present continuous. Actually, there is no difference, it is just two different ways to refer to the same thing.

Use

There are two main uses for this verb tense in English.

1. Situations that are occurring at the time of speaking:

The present progressive can be used to talk about actions that are taking place at the moment.

For example, “right now I am teaching English”; the action "teach English" is happening right now. The same example in English would be:

“I am teaching English at the moment” / “I am teaching English at the moment”

When we use English to talk about actions that are happening in the moment we regularly use keywords such as:

"At the moment" (at the moment)

"Now" (now)

"Right now" (at this precise moment)

2. The future:

Although it sounds a bit strange, the present continuous can also be used to refer to the future (Go to the lesson on the future in English). Look at the following example:

"I am meeting my boss tomorrow at 9 pm" / "I am going to meet my boss tomorrow at 9 pm"

In this example I am using the present progressive not to refer to this specific moment but to refer to the future. The action "meet my boss" will occur in the future, specifically tomorrow at 9pm.

Many times this special use confuses students, since they do not understand when it refers to the present and when it refers to the future.

I'm going to give you a key so that you never have this problem again: present progressive refers to the future when it contains a temporary reference to the future such as:

Tomorrow (tomorrow)

At (plus a specific time): at 7 am.

After (plus one event): after lunch (after lunch)

If there is a present progressive phrase and it does not contain a tense reference to the future, it will simply refer to the present.

Structure

Observe the structure in affirmative, negative and interrogative.

Spelling rules for the ING ending

1. If the verb has a single syllable with a Consonant + Vowel + Consonant ending like the verbs: run, shop or sit, we simply double the last consonant and add ING. Examples:

Run: running

Shop: shopping

There are some exceptions to this rule. If the verb is a single syllable and ends in Consonant + Vowel + Consonant, but the last consonant is W, X, Y or Z, we do not double the consonant. Examples:

Cry: crying

Fix: (Fix) fixing

2. When the verb has two or more syllables and the last syllable ends in Consonant + Vowel + Consonant we must pay attention to the center of the word. If the accent of the word falls on the first syllable, we do not double the consonant. Example:

Happen → happening

If the accent falls on the last syllable, we double the final consonant. Example:

Begin → beginning

3. When the verb ends in the vowel “e”, we simply remove the “e” and add ING. Example:

Dance → dancing

4. When the verb ends in "y", we simply add ING. Examples:

Play → playing

Study (to study) → studying

5. To all the other verbs (we suggest you learn more verbs in English) you just have to add ING (Reading, listening, etc.)
