1. Study out loud

Although reading in English is very good, we don't know many people who say, "I just want to learn to read in English. No. What people need is to SPEAK English. If you don't listen to yourself or to yourself saying what you are learning out loud, if you don't know how to put your mouth to make certain sounds, and if you don't practice it enough when you are studying, you are not going to be able to start talking in real life. It's that clear.

2. Talk to yourself

Talking to yourself, or it may just seem silly to you. Well, more silly is not being able to communicate in English after a lifetime of trying to learn it, right? Whenever you're alone or home alone, take the opportunity to speak out loud. For example, tell yourself what you're going to do during the day when you're in the shower in the morning, or tell an imaginary camera what recipe you're following while you're cooking dinner. Or whatever else comes to mind! This way you'll be less embarrassed when you have to talk to someone in English, and you'll also work on your grammar and vocabulary.

3. Record yourself

If you don't listen to yourself, you won't know where your mistakes are. Give a monologue about your day to your sound recorder and evaluate yourself afterwards. If improvisation isn't your thing, another option to improve your pronunciation is to take a text in English and record yourself reading it. Then think about what you can improve and work on those aspects.

4. Pay attention to the rhythm and how the sounds come together

Na-die-ha-bla-co-mo-un-ro-bot. Listen to how the English sounds come together and play it while you talk. A practical example: look at the phrase How much is it? (How much does it cost?). Nobody says How-much-is-it? like that, by separating the words. What you hear is more like this: /hháumaa-chi-sit/. So when you learn this phrase, learn it like this. And the same with everything else. You'll see that you'll understand much better when you're spoken to and your English will start to sound much more fluent.

5. Change the speed

Whether you speak alone, read aloud, or practice with different structures, try to do it very slowly at first, as slowly as you can, as if you were speaking in slow motion, and then go up a tempo, faster and faster, until you can barely vocalize. This exercise is very good to see how each sound is articulated and to gain in agility.

6. Imitate guiris

Almost all Spanish speakers we know imitate the guiris speaking Spanish perfectly. It may sound silly, but this is a great way to catch the intonation of English and to practice with sounds that don't exist in Spanish. For example, say several times out loud "Mei poune una servvveisa, pour favor", and then keep that intonation to say "Can I have a beer, please? you'll see how much better you can do!

7. When you have nothing else to do, translate mentally

Keep the phrases you read or hear when you're riding the subway or watching TV, for example, and think about how best to translate them into English. It's perfect for acquiring new vocabulary and expressions, and for working on your speaking skills, and you'll never get bored!

8. Create a thousand structures from a single sentence

This trick goes great for working on grammar. For example, imagine you're on the subway and someone says My dad's home. Translate it in your mind: My father is at home. And yesterday? My father was at home yesterday. And tomorrow? My father will be at home tomorrow. And this morning? My father has been at home this morning. Good! And now, repeat with another subject, for example: They're at home, They were at home yesterday, They will be at home tomorrow, They've been at home this morning. Okay, and now in negative: My father isn't at home, My father wasn't at home yesterday, My father won't be at home tomorrow, etc. And in interrogation? Is my father at home?, Was my father at home yesterday?, Will my father be at home tomorrow?, etc. Keep it up as long as you can and then try more phrases. Oh, and if you do it in a place where you can say it out loud or you can record yourself saying it, even better!
