Ilyana in one of her masks!
Plenty of heroes wear masks. Spider-Man does. Catwoman does too. Even doctors cover
their faces! Because of the coronavirus, a lot of other people are also wearing masks now. As
a result, many stores have sold out of masks. But Ilyana Vidal found a crafty way to be a hero
in her hometown. She sews face masks for people who need them!
Ilyana is a master of making masks. Her creations help stop the spread of the coronavirus.
“My project is to sew face masks for people in need,” the 12-year-old told News-O-Matic. The
clever kid is from Ceres, California. She taught herself to sew masks by watching YouTube
videos. It only took her two days to learn. And now her family helps out!
Ilyana’s father and her sister, Delia, help cut the fabric. Then her mom sews the first part of
the mask. Ilyana finishes the masks by sewing the pleats. Ilyana and her family have made
more than 200 masks! “We decided to start making masks because everybody is needing
them,” Ilyana shared. “The best way to help is to see a need and fill it.”
The young helper learned about the need for masks by reading about the issue. Now, “I make
about 10 masks a day,” Ilyana said. But it's not always easy to find the time. “I try to get in as
much as possible with my schoolwork,” she explained. And Ilyana said she has to do “a lot of
schoolwork" each day. “And when I say a lot, I mean a lot!”
After the busy kid finishes a batch of masks, she donates them. She gives them to family,
friends, and essential workers (such as doctors). Ilyana recently donated 25 masks to nearby
nurses. She also gave some to her teacher. “We’re donating to nearly everybody,” Ilyana
shared, “because everybody needs them.”
So how do these masks help stop the spread of the coronavirus? When people sneeze or
cough, droplets fly from their mouths. If a person is infected, these droplets can pass the
sickness to others. That happens even when a sick person speaks! But wearing a mask can
block these particles from escaping. Masks can also prevent some germs from coming in.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people wear cloth
face coverings. That group says people should wear masks when they go into places where it
is hard to social distance. The face masks should have at least two layers of fabric. Ilyana’s
creations follow the CDC’s guidelines. She said her masks give people “an added layer of
protection to keep themselves and others safe.”
Ilyana wants all the kids out there to know that they can be heroes too: “Give back when you
can!”
