Myrtle: Tom's lover.

Wilson: He was Myrtle's husband.

Jordan: Tom and Daisy's friend. She and Nick had a brief romance.

3. Nick begins by telling about a man named Gatsby describing him as the most optimistic man he's ever met. When he realizes that he doesn't want to talk about it anymore, the doctor suggests that he write in a journal something that comforts him, because for Nick the writing helped him and that's how the story begins.

Nick rents a small house on Long Island in West Egg, being a neighbor of Jay Gatsby's mansion. One day he goes to his cousin's house for lunch and meets Jordan. She reveals to Nick that Tom has a lover. A short time later, Nick travels with Tom. They stop at Wilson's garage and his wife Myrtle. Nick goes with Tom and Myrtle to an apartment where they kept their romance a secret, Myrtle throws a party with his sister, it all culminates when Tom hits Myrtle for his anger at her mention of Daisy.

Later, Nick gets an invitation to one of Gatsby's parties. Upon arriving at the party, he realizes that none of the nearly 100 guests personally know Gatsby and that they have various theories about who he is. Nick meets Jordan and they meet Gatsby.

Gatsby invites Nick to lunch with his mysterious friend Meyer Wolfshiem. Through Jordan, Nick learns that Gatsby knew Daisy and that he is still in love with her. Gatsby spends every night staring at a green light at the end of the pier, in front of his mansion, hoping to regain her love one day. Gatsby and Daisy reunite with Nick's help and begin an affair with each other.

Tom realizes Gatsby is in love with Daisy. He forces the group to go to New York, where he confronts Gatsby in a Plaza Hotel suite. Tom is right that he and Daisy have a story that Gatsby will never understand and then tells his wife that Gatsby is a criminal and that his fortune comes from alcohol smuggling and other illegal activities. Gatsby hits Tom and Daisy realizes she doesn't want to leave her husband. When Nick, Jordan and Tom head together back, they discover that Gatsby's car has been crashed and Myrtle has died. Nick discovers that it was Daisy who was driving during the accident but Gatsby was trying to blame himself for the accident.

Gatsby decides to go swimming before his pool is drained and asks if they can bring the phone to the pool as he was waiting for Daisy's call. The night before, Tom tells Myrtle's husband that Gatsby was the one driving the car. George also concludes that Gatsby was Myrtle's lover and goes in search of a gun. While at the mansion, Gatsby hears the phone ring, believing it to be Daisy. And he comes out of the pool as he looks hopefully at the bay where Daisy's mansion is located. At that moment, he is shot by George killing him and immediately after, he kills himself. Actually, the one who called Gatsby on the phone was Nick.

When Nick calls the Buchanans to invite Daisy to Gatsby's funeral, he learns that they left and no one really attended the funeral except him. Nick finishes his memoirs and calls them "The Great Gatsby".
