A few years ago, a prominent Mexican anthropologist wondered before his audience about the methodological feasibility of an anthropological study of human emotions. His concern revolved around the limits of the ethnographic method and his ability to access the phenomena of subjective experience, since they are singular events, of a cognitive and emotional order, internal to the individual and, therefore, accessible only indirectly to through its various expressive manifestations. Taking up that scientific challenge, I have carried out a survey of the main lines of research about emotions in the fields of anthropology, ethnology and anthropological linguistics, mainly the studies carried out for some three decades by English-speaking authors. These works, like the field of the anthropology of emotions, have been little explored by Latin American anthropology. This article reviews some of the main concepts and theories within this field.
