1. Visibility is the perceptible quality that allows you to see objects at a certain distance. The lower the visibility, the worse objects will be seen in the distance, while the greater the visibility, the more distant objects will be seen.
2.The ability to quantify visibility is important in planning and supporting air operations. That is why airports determine two types of visibility calculation:
Meteorological visibility, which is the ability to see the obstacles that surround it at any cardinal point, at a previously required distance. This form of measurement is distinguished by the abbreviation MOR (English: Meteorological Optical Range, "meteorological optical range"). To obtain the level of visibility with this technique, it is necessary to set an observation point, where the distance is established with the closest obstacles (houses, trees, hills, etc.), serving as a reference in a situation of reduced visibility.
Visual range of runway (in English: RVR, Runway Visual Range), which is more specific, as it is oriented to visibility on the runways, projecting it to the pilot at the time of landing or taking off. Visibility will be oriented in the direction of the landing strip and not towards any cardinal point (as in the case of MOR). The lights of the track are an ingredient to consider for this technique, since these visual aids allow to improve the visibility in moments of restriction of the same (Eg. Fog, fog, rain, snow or haze). In another era, these elements are found on a spreadsheet, where the observer is located at the end of the threshold of the runway and the amount of runway lights that he was able to see is contacted. This quantity was multiplied with the distance that was separating each other and was projected on a spreadsheet to obtain the RVR value. Obviously at present, this method, although accepted and used in emergency cases, is very complex, especially if it is applied in airports with a considerable flow of operations.
