Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
The workers' demand was clear: a request to reduce the working day to 8 hours, when the "normal" thing was to work between 12 and 16 hours. The protest, initially carried out by 80,000 workers, soon led to a powerful national strike that affected numerous factories in the United States. The strength shown by the workers in their claim marked a before and after in the history of all workers, establishing that date as "Labor Day"
