In the past I wasn’t interested in doing climbing as a sport. For a start, you have to be in the

mountains, and also you have to use a lot of special equipment. But last year I saw a TV

programme about climbing with a difference! It was about a French man called Alain Robert.

People call him ‘the human spiderman’, because he is famous for climbing very tall buildings

in cities, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House. In 2012 he climbed the Shard

in London, and in 2014 he went up the Ariane Tower in Paris.

Maybe you don’t think that sounds very impressive. But Alain Robert doesn’t use any special

climbing equipment – not even a helmet or a rope. He only wears climbing shoes. He doesn’t

fall very often, but when he does – like in 1982 – it is usually serious and he has to go to

hospital. One strange thing about Alain Robert is that he finds high places scary!

After I saw that TV programme, I decided to try climbing – but not up a skyscraper! I went on a

rock-climbing course at a local indoor climbing centre. You have to be 18 to do the course,

so I wasn’t allowed to start until after my birthday. But then, right from the beginning, I loved it.

It’s awesome when you get to the top of a climbing wall!

You don’t have to buy any special equipment. You have to wear a helmet, but you can borrow

it from the climbing centre. You just have to wear comfortable clothes and trainers. You mustn’t

wear jewellery and you mustn’t have anything in your pockets! Why don’t you try it?
