We know the damage we have already done to Earth in the name of progress: We have polluted its atmosphere, destroyed its forests, poisoned its rivers and caused the extinction of species that we did not even know existed. We are aware that we must change our attitudes about the consumption and contamination of natural resources by industrialized societies. We know that despite the scientific advances in agriculture, it is increasingly difficult to feed the world's growing population. However, all indicators show that these destructive trends, which have accelerated so dramatically over the past 40 years, will continue well into the next century. For example: -Every day between 50 and 100 species of animals and plants become extinct, as their habitat is destroyed. -The tropical forests are being excavated so fast that half can disappear in the next 40 years. -Uncontrolled fishing has reduced the fishing banks of almost all commercial species, some to less than a tenth of their previous quantity. The number of motor vehicles worldwide is expected to increase steadily with a corresponding increase in CO 2 emissions that accelerate climate changes caused by the greenhouse effect. We must do something to stop this disaster that threatens not only our generation but generations to come. The time has come to tighten the screws on politicians, to accelerate the pace of change. The evidence of what happens on Earth demands nothing less of us.
