(Otman, Osman, Othman or Uthman Ibn Affan; Mecca, around 570 - Medina, 656) Third orthodox caliph (between 644 and 656) and notable of Mecca. It happened to the second caliph Omar (634-644), after the murder of this by a disgruntled Persian Jariyí slave. The fate of this third orthodox caliph ran alongside that of his predecessor, since he also found a violent death, in 656, when he found himself praying in the aljama mosque in Medina, victim of a plot by all his political enemies.
