Estas expresiones traducidas significan "hay". Y para usarlas correctamente se debe tener en cuenta el verbo to be. There is se usa cuando hablamos en singular y afirma que sí hay. There are se usa cuando hablamos en plural para indicar que sí hay.

Sin contracción:

There is a car on the road. (Hay un auto en el camino)

There are two large windows in my office. (Hay dos ventanas grandes en mi oficina)

Con contracción:

There’s a police station next to the supermarket. (Hay una estación de policía al lado del supermercado)

There’s someone at the door. (Hay alguien en la puerta)

El nothing es negativo por si sólo. Anything puede ir en una frase negativa si hay una negación (don’t, doesn’t, isn’t, aren’t, haven’t, won’t, couldn’t etc) antes. Ambas significan "nada" por eso hay ciertas confusiones.
