The Moche culture is an archeological culture of Ancient Peru that developed between the second and fifth centuries in the Moche river valley (now Trujillo province, in the department of La Libertad). Current culture spread to the valleys of the north coast of present-day Peru. This is still preserved and has many inhabitants. The Moche society did major hydraulic engineering works: irrigation canals and dams, which allowed them to expand their agricultural frontier on a large scale.
They were great architects; Its raw material was adobe. They built religious-administrative complexes of a monumental nature, made up of palaces and temples or huacas (in the form of a truncated pyramid), which covered them with large murals in high and low relief, painted with colors extracted from nature, where they embodied their gods, myths, legends and all its cultural worldview. The most notable of these constructions are the so-called Huacas del Sol and de la Luna, in the Moche Valley.
They were the best metallurgists of their time; they gilded copper much earlier than in Europe; and they knew a variety of techniques (rolling, hammering, wiring, welding, etc.), which allowed them to make tools, weapons, clothes, emblems, ornaments and all their varied and rich ritual paraphernalia.
They are considered the best potters of ancient Peru, thanks to their fine and elaborate work they did in their ceramics. In them they represented, both sculpturally and pictorially, divinities, men, animals and significant scenes referring to ceremonial themes and myths that reflected their conception of the world, highlighting the amazing expressiveness, perfection and realism with which they endowed them. Of this art stand out the huacos portraits and the erotic huacos.
