A cubic meter of soil in its natural state weighs 17.75 kn; after being dried it weighs 15.08 kn. the specific gravity of the solids is 2.70. determine the wáter content, void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation for the soil as existed in its natural state

the wáter content, void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation for the soil as existed in its natural state are :

 w= 17.7% ;  e = 0.756 ; n = 0.4 ;   Sr = 0.716

Given :

W = 17.75 KN →  Wd = 15.08 KN   (when dried)

 Gs= 2.70

 V = 1 m³

  w =?   e =?   n =?   Sr =?

                                Volumen     masa

      Air                       ( 1 -Sr)*e         o

      water       e               Sr*e        wGsρw

      Solid        1                                  Gsρw

 a) w = Mw/Ms

     w = ( 17.75 - 15 .08 ) /15.08 = 0.177→  w= 17.7%

     γ  = Gs*(1+w) γw/( 1+e) = W/V  = 17.75/1 = 17.75 KN/m³

    17.75 = 2.70* ( 1 + 0.177 )*9.81/(1+e)

     de donde:

     void ratio    e = 0.756

     porosity :    n = Vv/V = e/(1+e)

                       n= 0.4

     Sr = W*Gs/e = 0.177*2.70 /0.667

    Sr = 0.716
