My time in India
Last year, I decided to volunteer … in India! It was a decision that changed my life! I said goodbye to my mom (she cried) and my dad and started my amazing journey. I left my hometown in the U.S. on July 19 and flew to New Delhi. Then I took two trains up to the north of the country. Now I live in a small village. I want to be a teacher one day, so I volunteered to teach English. So, what is it like?
A typical day goes like this:
7:00 am: Get up and walk ten minutes up the side of a mountain to a family’s home. One of the bedrooms is also a classroom. There are children aged 5 to 17 in class! Some speak a little English, others do not.
7:30 am: I start teaching my class. We play games, do quizzes, and have a lot of fun! The kids are great. They’re all happy and they enjoy the chance to talk with me.
9:00 am: We have a break. Usually, we drink a special Indian tea named “chai.” It’s hot in India and “chai” is great. It cools you down and tastes delicious.
9:30 am: The kids want to learn about the U.S. I get a map and talk about the different places.
11:00 am: Soccer time! The kids run all over the place laughing and kicking the ball.
Lunchtime: Delicious food every day! No pizzas, no hamburgers!
In the afternoons it gets very hot. Many people take a short nap. I often go for a walk and look at the beautiful countryside. Sometimes I do a little shopping in the market. Then I prepare my class for the next day. The kids love art class, so I often prepare an art project for them.
6:00 pm: I make dinner. I love all the different foods here. There are fruits and vegetables that we don’t have in the U.S.
In the evening, I spend time writing emails to my family back home and go to bed early. It’s great fun here, but I get tired!
