Michael Joseph Jackson was born on August 29, 1958. He was the eighth of the ten children of the Jackson family, a working-class African-American family living in a two-bedroom house on Jackson Street in Gary, Indiana, an industrial city in the metropolitan area of Chicago. His mother, Katherine Esther Scruse, was a devoted Jehovah's Witness. She played clarinet and piano and once aspired to be a country & western artist, but had a part time at Sears to support the family.30 Michael's father, Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson, a former boxer, was a worker of steel in US Steel. Joe acted as a guitarist in a local rhythm and blues band, the Falcons, to complement the family's income.30 Michael grew up with three sisters (Rebbie, La Toya and Janet) and five brothers (Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Randy) A sixth brother, Marlon's twin, Brandon, died shortly after birth.31

Jackson had a troubled relationship with his father.32 33 In 2003, Joe acknowledged that he had whipped him as a child.34 It was also said that Joe had verbally abused his son, often saying he had a "fat nose." 35 Jackson He stated that in his childhood he was physically and emotionally abused during relentless rehearsals, although he proved that his father's strict discipline played an important role in his success.32 In an interview with Martin Bashir for the 2003 documentary Living with Michael Jackson, Jackson he recorded that Joe often sat in a chair with a belt in his hand while he and his brothers were rehearsing, and "if you didn't do it the right way, it would beat you up, it really whipped you." 36 Jackson's parents have disputed allegations of abuse for a long time, with Katherine claiming that while whipping is abuse abuse today, it was still a common form of discipline to children s at the time.37 38 39 Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon have also said that their father was not abusive and that the scourges, harder to face for Michael because he was younger, kept them disciplined and out of trouble .40 Talking openly about their childhood in an interview with Oprah Winfrey broadcast on February 1993, Jackson recognized that his youth had been lonely and isolated.41 His deep dissatisfaction with his appearance, his nightmares and his chronic sleep problems, his tendency to remain hyperobedient, especially with his father, and to remain childish in adulthood , are consistent as effects of the abuse he suffered as a child. His father committed adultery several times, and the fruit of one of these extramarital affairs had a daughter.42 That type of relationship caused the couple not to feel a pleasure with their wedding relationship, so since 2005 the couple stopped living together and in August 2010 they announced their separation after 60 years of marriage.43

From an early age, Michael showed interest in music when he sang at the Christmas celebrations of the kindergarten he attended. In 1964, Michael and Marlon joined the Jackson Brothers - a band composed of their father, which included the brothers Jackie, Tito and Jermaine - as reserve musicians playing congas and tambourine.
In 1965, Michael began sharing the lead voice with his older brother Jermaine, and the name of the group was changed to the Jackson 5.45 The following year, the group won an important show of local talents with Jackson performing the 1965 success dance of Robert Parker "Barefoot." From 1966 to 1968 a tour of the Midwest took place, frequently performing in a chain of black clubs known as the "chitlin circuit" as the opening act for artists such as Sam & Dave, the O'Jays, Gladys Knight and Etta James. The Jackson 5 also performed in nightclubs and party halls, where strip shows and other adult acts were performed, and in local auditoriums and high school dances.46 In August 1967, while traveling on the East Coast, the group won a weekly evening concert for fans at the Apollo Theater in Harlem
