The atmosphere protects life on Earth, absorbing much of the ultraviolet solar radiation in the ozone layer. In addition, it acts as a protective shield against meteorites, which disintegrate into dust due to the friction they suffer when making contact with air.

The atmosphere of the earth is composed of a combination of gases. The major components of nitrogen, oxygen and argon remain constant throughout time and space, while components such as CO2 and water vapor vary considerably through space and time.
