The western black rhinoceros was 3 - 3.8 m long, had a height of 1.4 - 1.7 m and weighed 800 - 1300 kg.3 They had two horns, the first measured from 0.5 to 1.3 and the second from 2 to 55 cm. 3 Like all black rhinos, it could be found in the savanna.

It was largely hunted at the beginning of the 20th century, but the population increased in the 1930s after conservation measures were taken. In 1980 there was a population of several hundred. Poaching continued and in 2000 only 10 survived. In early 2006, an intensive study of northern Cameroon (the last habitat of this subspecies) found no specimen, but efforts to locate a specimen continued.
