Social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace do not help you make more genuine close friends, according to some researchers who studied how the websites are changing the nature of friendship networks. Social networking, which helps people collect hundreds or even thousands of acquaintances, cannot replace face to face contact, which is nearly always necessary to form truly close friendships. What is interesting is that, although people have massive numbers of friends on these sites, the number of friends to whom one is actually close is approximately the same as in the face to face real world. The reason why this happens seems to be that there are certain cognitive constraints to keeping up with large numbers of people, which requires too much brain effort.

Moreover, 90% of those people who are regarded as close friends are people we have met face to face. Face to face contact is absolutely imperative in forming close friendships.

What social networking sites do is allow people to broaden their list of acquaintances, rather than friendships. Social networks, whose maintenance is relatively easy, are ideal for posting information to multiple people.

Nevertheless, to develop real friendship, we need to see that the other person is trustworthy. This is not something one can establish on the Internet, where it is very easy to be deceptive.
