Vincent van Gogh was the eldest of the six children of a Protestant pastor, and he maintained with his brother Theo, four years younger than him, a relationship that would be decisive in his existence and in his artistic career. The correspondence that both exchanged throughout their lives testifies to the intimacy of this relationship and the human and creative passions and anguish that tormented Van Gogh in his last years. After receiving a careful education in a private boarding school, at sixteen he entered as an apprentice in the subsidiary of The Hague of the Parisian art gallery Goupil, a society of art dealers founded by his uncle Vincent.

In 1873 he went to the branch of the Goupil Gallery in London, where he had to suffer the first of his sentimental failures; in 1875 he was transferred to the Parisian branch; in 1876 he said goodbye and returned to Holland. He later worked as a teacher, assistant to a Methodist pastor and clerk at a bookstore; none of these jobs lasted a long time. At that time he felt above all the spiritual need to give himself to his fellow men; in fact, he had always wanted to be a pastor, like his father, and such a vocation took him to Amsterdam to continue his studies in theology, which he suspended.

He then went to the School of Practical Evangelization in Brussels, and in 1878 he was sent by his superiors to the Borinage mining area. Established in the village of Pâturages, near Mons, he made a series of drawings of the miners. The School of Evangelization expelled him for his excessive involvement: impressed by his subhuman hardships, Van Gogh came to give the miners what little he had and to live more poorly than them.
