Hola, te remito las frases empleando el conector BUT,  en la primera oración te envío además una forma adicional de cómo sonaría mejor la oración.

Old cars spend a lot of gas, but new cars spend less gas.

(Old cars spend a lot of gas, but the new ones spend less gas)

They had a hard life, but the children did not have to go to school.

The days in the desert are very hot, but the nights in the desert are cold.
