Halloween (contraction of All Hallows' Eve, 'Eve of All Saints'), also known as Night of witches or witch Day is a celebration of Celtic held on the evening of October 31, particularly in countries English-speaking Canada, the United States, Ireland and the UK and to a lesser extent, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru or Latin America overall, and in much of Spain. Despite being truly speaking countries, in Australia and New Zealand is not seen as much as in other countries.
Its roots are linked to the Celtic celebration of Samhain and the Christian holy day of All Saints, celebrated by Catholics on November 1. It is largely a secular celebration, but some feel that has a religious background. Irish immigrants passed versions of the tradition to North America during the Great Irish Famine.
The day is often associated with orange, black and purple colors, and is strongly associated with symbols like the jack-o'-lantern. Typical activities include the famous Halloween trick or treating and costume parties, plus bonfires, visiting haunted houses, pranks, reading scary stories and viewing of horror films.
