Viewing a Solar Eclipse
Paragraph 1
Looking directly at the sun is never safe. You will need a shoebox, a piece of aluminum foil, a ruler, a marker, a knife, a pin, and some tape. However, you can view a solar eclipse safely by making a viewing device from materials commonly found around the house.
Paragraph 2
Make sure an adult is nearby in the event that you need assistance or have questions. Then, on one of the long sides of the box, measure and draw a one-inch by four-inch rectangle. First, on one of the short ends of a shoebox, use a ruler and a marker to measure and draw a one-inch square in the center.
Paragraph 3
Using a sharp knife and great care, cut out both the square and rectangle. Take a small piece of foil (a little larger than the 1-inch square) and using a pin, gently poke a small hole in the center of the piece of foil. Secure the foil with tape to the 1-inch square opening on the cardboard box.
Paragraph 4
Aim the pinhole end of the box toward the sun, and look through the rectangular opening on the box's long side. An image of the sun's eclipse should appear on the inside end of the box, opposite the pinhole. In a device like this, the hole is called a pinhole.
