The option D: Trees live off of stored nutrients. Winter brings changes to all of nature, including deciduous trees, those which lose their leaves because they don't have the energy to supply nutrients to their leaves. They go dormant (which is some kind of hibernation) and everything within them slow down, so they left their leaves fall down.
