Legend has it that, the same day that Alexander was born, an extravagant pyromaniac burned one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the temple of Artemis in Ephesus, taking advantage of the absence of the goddess, who had come to protect the birth of the prince. When he was arrested, he confessed that he had done so that his name would go down in history. The authorities executed him, ordered him to disappear until the most recondite testimony of his passage through the world and prohibited anyone from ever pronouncing his name. But more than two thousand years later the infamous outrage of the disturbed Errostrato is still remembered, and the priests of Ephesus, according to legend, saw in the catastrophe the unequivocal symbol that someone, somewhere in the world, had just been born to reign over all the East. According to another description, that of Plutarch, his birth occurred during a night of hurricane winds, which the augurs interpreted as the announcement of Jupiter that his existence would be glorious.
