John Winston Ono Lennon (born John Winston Lennon, 9 October 1940-New York, 8 December 1980) was a multi-instrumentalist musician and British composer who rose to fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, recognized as the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed band in the history of popular music. Together with Paul McCartney, he formed one of the most successful composers of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Liverpool, where as a teenager was immersed in the British skiffle boom, forming the band The Quarrymen, which later in 1960 would become The Beatles. When the group disintegrated later in the decade, Lennon began a solo career, marked by several critically acclaimed albums, including John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs like "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine '. After marrying Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon retired from the music scene in 1975 to raise his young son Sean, but resurfaced with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was killed three weeks after its launch. He demonstrated a rebellious character and a mordacious wit in his music, the cinema, the literature and the drawing, as well as in his declarations in press conferences and interviews. In addition, the polemic pursued him because of his constant activism for the peace next to Ono. In 1971 he moved to Manhattan, where his opposition to the Vietnam War resulted in numerous attempts by the Nixon government to expel him from the country; while, their songs were adopted like hymns by the movement against the war and the counterculture. Until 2012, in the United States, Lennon's solo sales exceeded 14 million units, and as an interpreter, author or co-author, he is responsible for twenty-five singles on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2002, eighth in a BBC poll on the "Top 100 Britons," while in 2008 he was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as the fifth best singer of all time. After his death he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Composers in 1987 and the Hall of Fame of Rock in 1994.
