The True Story of Halloween. Halloween has its origins in Samhain, the holiday where the Celts of Ireland and Britain announced the end of summer and the arrival of the "New Year". Participants wore masks and made bonfires to ward off evil spirits. Animal sacrifices were also made. When the Romans conquered the Celts in the first century BC. adopted the celebration and merged it with the "harvest festival", which they performed in honor of Pomona (goddess of fruit trees) at the end of October. In the 9th century AD. Pope Gregory IV (827-844) supplanted this pagan festival for a Christian holiday: All Saints' Day celebrated every November 1st.

The feast of All Saints came to America with the voyages of Christopher Columbus at the end of the fifteenth century. But in the 19th century, Irish immigrants carried their old traditions to the United States and Canada, including the custom of carving giant pumpkins and putting candles in.

In 1921, the first Halloween parade was held in Minnesota, and has since spread to several cities in North America. In the late 1970s, film and television made the festival popular and spread across many countries around the world.
