Bell, along with the American Elisha Gray, was considered for many years the inventor of the telephone but in fact did not create it, but was the first to patent it, in 1876. The father of the phone was the Italian Antonio Meucci, who baptized him as teletrófono. This was approved by the Congress of the United States on June 11, 2002, after a historic struggle for the device. In 1871 Meucci, who emigrated from Florence to New York, was only able, due to economic difficulties, to present a brief description of his invention, but not to formalize the patent before the United States Patent Office. Before, in 1860, Meucci had presented the invention in society. After patenting the telephone, Bell began a series of demonstrations to introduce the apparatus between the scientific community as well as to the general public, being in the Universal Exhibition in Philadelphia of 1876 the great presentation of the apparatus. The Bell Telephone Company was created in 1877 and by 1886, more than 150,000 people in the US owned telephones. The company's Bell engineers made numerous phone enhancements, which became one of the most successful products. In 1879, Bell's company acquired the Edison patents for the Western Union Coal Microphone. This made the handset practical for long distances, unlike Bell's voice-operated transmitter that required users to yell at it to be heard on the receiving telephone, even at short distances. On January 25, 1915, Alexander Graham Bell sent the first transcontinental telephone call from Day Street in New York City, which was received by Thomas Watson at 333 Grant Avenue in San Francisco, California.
