Rosario Castellanos was a novelist, short storyteller, poet, essayist and diplomat and probably the most important Mexican writer of the 20th century. Her master's thesis of 1950, On Feminine Culture, became a turning point for modern Mexican writers, who found in him a profound call to self-consciousness. Castellanos was the daughter of Chiapas landowners and spent her formative years at a ranch near the border with Guatemala. He received an excellent education in Mexico and Europe. From 1960 to 1966 she was press director of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Later, she was visiting professor in several institutions of the United States to return to Mexico and to accept the chair of comparative literature in the National Autonomous University. In 1971 she was appointed ambassador of Mexico to Israel, and died there three years later, accidentally electrocuted at her home in Tel Aviv, on August 7, 1974. Castellanos was passionately interested in the works of two writers: the 16th-century Spanish author and religious, Santa Teresa de Avila, and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, the 17th-century Mexican poet, poet. of San Juan de la Cruz. In them he simultaneously expresses indignation at social injustice and ecstasy at the beauty of creation. The poetry of Castellanos is as powerful and original as that of his contemporary Octavio Paz, although he is best known for his prose works. His most famous novel, Oficio de tinieblas (1962) recreates an indigenous rebellion that took place in the city of San Cristóbal de las Casas in the 19th century, but Castellanos settled it in the 1930s, when his own family suffered for the reforms brought about by Lázaro Cárdenas del Río during the Mexican Revolution. Castellanos donated the land that he inherited to the destitute Indians of Chiapas.
