Nadia Elena Comaneci was born on November 12, 1961, in Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, Romania, in the Carpathians, daughter of Alexandria and Gheorghe, an auto mechanic. Nadia was discovered at the age of 6 by gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi (who would later become coach of the Romanian national team).

In her early years as a gymnast, Nadia won the National Youth Championship of Romania, and, in her senior year, won the European Championship in 1975 and the America's Cup in 1976.

Comaneci made the world vibrate at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada, where, at age 14, she became the first woman to win a 10 at an Olympic gymnastics event. He received seven perfect scores and won three gold medals in asymmetrical bars, balance beam and the overall individual, along with a bronze medal in the second place of the Romanian national team. Comaneci's performance at the 1976 Olympics redefined both this sport and the expectations of female athletes.

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Russia, Nadia won two gold medals, at the balance bar and floor exercises and two silver medals, in the team and individual competition. The following year, after leading the Romanian national team in two Olympics, Bela Karolyi deserted to the United States.

Comaneci retired from competition in 1984 and worked as a coach for the Romanian team before also defecting to the United States through Hungary in 1989. After appearing in a series of provocative lingerie ads, she married the American gymnast Bart Conner in 1996 and moved to Norman, Oklahoma.

In 1999, Comaneci received the World Sports Award of the Century, after being chosen "Athlete of the Century" during a gala in Vienna, Austria.

The Olympic champion was forged a new life in the United States. He is currently a television commentator and writes for gymnastics publications. She and her husband travel extensively throughout the country for exhibitions and commercial presentations, in addition to their work at the academy in Norman. He has not forgotten the dark times, but he does not like to talk about them. However, she likes it when people stop to talk to her about her Olympic performances.

Even today it is recalled how Comaneci captivated fans, judges and spectators at the 1976 Olympic Games, and how they changed the world of gymnastics forever.
