At first sight the hyenas have the appearance of a canine, although they do have very different anatomies and abilities.
They have large, pointed ears. As its name says, the mottled species has spots all over its body and its coat is short compared to the brown hyena species that has it abundant and very long. The latter is also characterized by horizontal stripes on all four legs.
The front legs of the hyenas are longer than the hind legs and that is why their bodies are slightly tilted back. They have short, non-retractable claws that they use to dig and have more ability to run.
Their teeth are very powerful, because they are specialized in feeding on carrion and grinding bones of large animals, so a bite in the neck of the dam, is synonymous with an almost instantaneous death.
These carnivores are distributed on the African continent, mainly in the sub-Saharan region and also occupy regions of the Middle East such as India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They can be found in arid zones with little vegetation like the savannah and the scrub at temperatures that oscillate around 35 degrees Celsius.

A simple vista las hienas tienen el aspecto de un cánido, aunque realmente tienen anatomías y habilidades muy distintas.
Poseen orejas grandes y puntiagudas. Como su nombre lo dice, la especie moteada tiene manchas a lo largo de todo su cuerpo y su pelaje es corto a comparación de la especie hiena parda que lo tiene abundante y muy largo. Esta última se caracteriza también por las rayas horizontales en sus cuatro patas.
Las patas delanteras de las hienas son más largas que las traseras y es por ello que sus cuerpos se ven ligeramente inclinados hacia atrás. Poseen garras cortas y no retráctiles que utilizan para cavar y tener más habilidad para correr.
Su dentadura es muy potente, pues están especializadas en alimentarse de carroña y triturar huesos de grandes animales, por lo que una mordida en el cuello de la presa, es sinónimo de una muerte casi instantánea.
Estos carnívoros están distribuidos en el continente africano, principalmente en la región subsahariana y ocupan también regiones del oriente medio como la India, Pakistán y Afganistán. Pueden encontrarse en las zonas áridas con poca vegetación como la sabana y el matorral a temperaturas que oscilan alrededor de los 35 grados Celsius.
