Why did the church control everything in the middle ages .

The only church that existed during the Middle Ages was the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church was a had control over the European people, so much so that it had its own laws and taxes. This Church was very powerful and could even control the kings of the land. Going against the church was know as heresy and was considered a foul crime. Many heretics were burned at the stake and therefore never made it to heaven.
