Have you ever seen a movie and thought it deserved an award for being terrible? Well, an American named John J. B. Wilson did, and it led him to create a special award to “honor” the worst of Hollywood.
For years, John held an annual party at his house in Los Angeles on the night of the Academy Awards. He invited friends over to eat and watch the awards show on TV. It was fun seeing celebrities collect “Oscar” statues. However, John and his guests didn’t always agree with the judges!
One year, John had an idea: the Academy Awards celebrate the best of the best, so why not create a show for the worst of the worst? That’s how the Golden Raspberry Award was born. The first “Razzies” award
show took place in John’s living room in 1981. The show was similar to the Academy Awards—only it gave awards for the worst performances. John even created a Razzies statue, although it was not made of gold like the Oscars. Instead, it was a giant raspberry painted gold.
In 2015, the Golden Raspberry celebrated its thirty- fifth year and the Academy Award celebrated its eighty-seventh having begun in 1929! The Oscars is an invitation-only show, but the Razzies show is open to the public—yes, anyone can attend! Of course, accepting an award for “the worst” anything takes
a good sense of humor. Unlike the celebrity Oscar winners, most Razzie winners don’t collect their awards in person, but some do!
Next time you see a real “stinker” in the movie theater, get in on the fun—nominate it for a Razzie!
