Hola, BiancaX7:

EXERCISE

Complete the text with the correct past form of 'be'.

Last night, my boyfriend and I went to see a play. It (1) was Shakespeare's comedy 'Much Ado About Nothing'. It (2) was very good and we laughed all the way through. The main actor, who played Benedict, (3) was excellent. The scenes (4) [were not]/weren't repetitive. Also, the costumes (5) were very well designed and the sound (6) was perfect! To my surprise, the theatre (7) [was not]/wasn't full. The three seats next to me (8) were empty. I think they need to improve the publicity because the play is worth it!

NOTAS:

1. Hay un pequeño error en el texto:

They❌ main actor, who played Benedict, (3) _________ excellent.

The✔️main actor, who played Benedict, (3) _________ excellent.

2. Cuando el sujeto es (o puede ser reemplazado por) los pronombres 'I', 'he', 'she' o 'it', el verbo 'to be' en pasado simple tiene la forma 'was'. Para el resto de los pronombres ('you', 'we' y 'they') se usa la forma 'were'.

En este texto:

It (1) was Shakespeare's comedy 'Much Ado About Nothing'.

• Sujeto: It ➙ Verb 'to be': [̲̅+̲̅] was

It (2) was very good [...].

• Sujeto: It ➙ Verb 'to be': [̲̅+̲̅] was

The main actor, who played Benedict, (3) was excellent.

• Sujeto: The main actor, who played Benedict, (= He) ➙ Verb 'to be': [̲̅+̲̅] was

PAST SIMPLE – VERB 'TO BE'

El pasado simple del verbo 'to be' (= ser/estar) tiene solo dos formas, que se escogen según el sujeto de la oración:

• Sujeto: I, he, she, it ----------- Verbo: WAS

• Sujeto: you, we, they -------- Verbo: WERE

➜ Para formar oraciones afirmativas en 'past simple' con el verbo 'to be' hay que escribir el sujeto, la forma apropiada del verbo 'to be' y los complementos.

Ejemplos:

• She was Greek. (= Ella era griega.)

• You were tired. (= Estabas cansado.)

➜ Para formar oraciones negativas en 'past simple' con el verbo 'to be' hay que añadir el adverbio negativo 'not' luego del verbo 'to be'. También se pueden usar las contracciones negativas 'wasn't' (= was + not) y 'weren't' (= were + not).

Ejemplos:

• She was not Greek. / She wasn't Greek. (= Ella no era griega.)

• You were not tired. / You weren't tired. (= No estabas cansado.)

➜ Para formar oraciones interrogativas (= preguntas) en 'past simple' con el verbo 'to be' hay que invertir el orden sujeto-verbo, es decir, hay que escribir primero la forma correcta del verbo 'to be', luego el sujeto y por último, los complementos.

Ejemplos:

Was she Greek? (= ¿Ella era griega?)

Were you tired? (= ¿Estabas cansado?)

Estas son todas las estructuras:

Past simple – Affirmative | Verb 'to be':

• Sujeto + verbo WAS/WERE + complementos

Past simple – Negative | Verb 'to be':

• Sujeto + verbo WAS/WERE + NOT + complementos

• Sujeto + contracción WASN'T/WEREN'T + complementos

Past simple – Interrogative  | Verb 'to be':

Yes/No questions:

• Verbo WAS/WERE + sujeto + complementos + ?

Wh-questions:

• Wh-word + verbo WAS/WERE + sujeto + complementos + ?

Past simple – Interrogative Negative  | Verb 'to be':

• Verbo WAS/WERE + sujeto + NOT + complementos + ?

• Contracción WASN'T/WEREN'T + sujeto + complementos + ?

Saludos.  ✨
